Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

I have been sidetracked with the always surprising and variety-filled Buckley Book of 1860. Thank God there are several Tutors...it serves my ADD well. I can always come back and play things, seeing something a little different each time.

No, not that I recall.
I've been working on a number of things.

To improve our impression, I've built a couple of wooden music stands. I built a new stand to hold two banjos - my Bouche and gourd. I hate lying instruments down.

I've been playing through a few pieces in Buckley, you've put the bug in me for that.

I also am preparing a presentation on banjo for the Midwest Civilian's Confererence early next year. In doing so I have been gathering /practicing a number of earlier tunes, including Jump Jim Crow, Coal Black Rose, and Ole Tare River.
I am interested in stands/period cradles for instruments as well John...mind postin photos of your modest efforts,we have been tryin to fab something from tree limbs that includes portability, and as "non-farby"as possible.thanks in advance.Halisha

I'm working on "G. Swaine Buckley's Celebrated Minor Jig" - The standard notation was...um, challenging, but I'm now little better at reading chords than I was when I started. The T.T. video helped a lot. What a demented tune! Makes me want to go find a tuba player. Does anybody remember Taj Mahal and Howard Johnson's great clawhammer banjo & tuba duet of "Tom & Sally Drake" on some live lp a million yeras ago?
That little chord sequence is really cool.
GSBCMJ is starting to turn into actual music - Judy sez, "Thanks a lot" - but then goes off to try it on the piano. The mix of stoke and "guitar-style" picking that's on the video seems to be the the way to go with this. Was there a discussion thread a while ago about when guitar-style started to appear on the scene.
