I never stuff unless it's unavoidable.  I am not a fan of stuffing...  ring the banjer!   :)

Stuffing for a good recording is necessary sometimes. Just the way it is.

Agree with the better sound of open, but when recording...the mic will pick up and represent things in a weird way - it has to do with the way 2 or more notes work together...a stopped note setting an open one in motion, the interval of a m2, etc etc. It depends upin the nature of the music also. And, a mic will respond to things differently just by a slight displacement.

You just need to start playing and see what you get that day. No different than being in a top notch studio and making the proper adjustment.
