This is from a Dan Emmett print. Every person on each corner of the print is holding an instrument. What in creation is this man playing?!?

Looks like a boot jack.  I wonder if it is related to the skit "The Black Boot Blacks" that was a common routine.

Haha I've seen this and wondered myself what it was. Even tho I know what a boot jack is it never clicked.
