Walnut banjo neck in the rough. Drawknife from 1895.
New member. Although I've built a couple of stringed instruments, never a banjo. I will be curing this by the campfire for many hours over the summer and begin carving in October. No doubt, I will be asking for advice as I work through the project. This will be Boucher style.

Wow. That really is starting from scratch. I have built several Boucher necks, but I always started with kiln dried lumber.
Do keep posting your progress. This should be interesting.

It might be a good idea to remove some excess material before drying. Choose a length, and rough out the shape a bit to facilitate the drying process? I roughed out my neck with a band saw and let it sit for a whole summer,though that was not my plan. Just happened that way. My wood was already kiln dried, though. Have fun!
