Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

It is almost the middle of the month, but we could still get in a TOTM for April.  I would suggest Juba.  It is an easy tune and a great way for new folks to practice basic strikes in the stroke style.  You can find it on page 14 of the Rice 1858 book.  Any comments or other suggestions?

Suggestion...open it up to all the Jubas.....compare them a bit. They are all about the same, but the nuances may be revealing.

I didn't know that there was more than one Juba

Great idea, Tom!

A great, if not THE greatest, beginner tune of all.

Yeah, I've noticed some little variations in tabs from different people.

My favorite recorded verion is Clark Buehling's, tho I suspect he laid in more than one banjo tracks(?).  Even with two tracks, there's only one Clark!   ;D   I love the percussion rattling....   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShCEgVsTLx8

If you need it, here are a couple of simple tab guides for developing your own Juba celebration...from Dave Hyatt's gourd banjo site:

Jubas are in Converse Yellow and Green, Buckley 1860, Rice ( as mentioned ). I think  have seen them in one of the Winner's Book......maybe the Dobson.

I have mentioned it before, but I think Whoop Jamboree is a Juba improvisation.

They are all available there on my site.

So Juba....here we go

We always used to try to get a tune of the week or tune of the fortnight going but it never seemed to stick. With these new phones it's much easier to post so I'll do my little bit. A month seems kinda long, perhaps we can come up with a shorter but not too short space.

I'll contribute a tab

Hi Carl,  I had started a "Beginner tune of the Month" specifically intended for beginners, for several reasons.  I didn't want to interfere with Tim's or anyone else's TOTWeek, which was almost always too difficult and flew by too fast for me to learn or record.  So I wanted to encourage an additional one but geared towards slower beginners so they could work on one of the simpler repertoire tunes for several weeks before attempting to record it...here was my post about it: http://minstrelbanjo.ning.com/forum/topics/beginner-tune-of-the-mon...

I encourage everyone to continue as Tim has done in the past- posting regular level "Tune of the Week"s as well, whenever they like!  The more options for various level players the better, I figure.   :)

Thank you for the clarification, Strum. Having several "tune-shops" going sounds like a good idea.

I am all for any tune of the week as long as it has participation. I think there is a lot we can all learn, from any single one of these. Carry on Strum.

I'll participate, Tim. I got my mind right.
