Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

From Buckley 1860. The dotted rhythm is found only in the first line, but I compared this to the original found here http://www.abdn.ac.uk/scottskinner/search.php?filter=Title&keyword=tullochgorum&search=search
and kept the figure throughout. I'm not even sure how to pronounce this correctly. If Rob pops in, perhaps he can tell us how, and give us a little history of the tradition of this song.

Come gie's your hand Montgomery cried
And lay your disputes a' aside
What nonsense 'tis for folks to chide
For what's been done before 'em
Let Whig & Tory all agree
Whig and Tory - Whig and Tory
Whig and Tory all agree
And mak' a cheerful quorum
Let whig and Tory all agree
To spend this night in mirth and glee
And cheerful sing along with me
The reel of Tullochgorum

From memory - how'd I do Rob? There are four or five more verses!

Pronounced about the way it looks - Tullock-gorum

Should be "gies a song"
A great 18th century song about putting politic differences aside in the interest of singing, fiddling and dancing.
Still commonly played as a strathspey in Canada (especially Cape Breton)

Thanks Ian.

Yes, a weel-kent, or well-known tune, and mostly dotted as in your performance, Tim.

The ch is not the same as ck, Ian. It should be more gutteral, back of the throat.

Looks like a good piece for working on your intonation. Tim's is good. Mine not so. I think I'll dig it out and have a go.

Spent a couple of hours on it this Sunday morning, mostly on trying to work out a sensible way of plotting the notes on the 'fretboard'. Here is my tab - very different from Tim's, but no better or worse. Just one of many possibilities: Tullochgorumb Banjo.pdf

Tim, does this book (Buckley's 1860) exist as a PDF anywhere? Bob - I'll work on the Scots throat-clearing sound. My Glaswegian friend Enoch does it all the time.

I don't know. I may put it up in the Clubhouse, as I have secured it from Brown and have permissions. This is one you can actually still purchase. In the meantime, do you want a few pages?

I'd be happy to buy it. Is this a Tuckahoe production?

I got mine from Elderly http://elderly.com/books/items/351-3.htm - but I fear they might not any back in stock for a long time.

If I can just find the box in which it is packed away, I have an original...if Tim is reluctant to post his copies, mine is "in the que" to be photographed and converted to .pdf.
