Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

From the ABM of 1886. It is an original by Frank Converse. I changed the last note...thought about it a lot, and decided to resolve it on a "C" instead of the wrtten "A". This book does not have many mistakes, so changing something is not a knee jerk reaction when something seems amiss. The fingering "4" above the note, and the logical way it resolves led me to do it.

Well done. That is not an easy piece.

PS I think it's an A...

WARNING!! NERDY BANJO TALK-
Okay, it might be, but the C sounds better and makes musical sense. See M 19, the only time an "A" has any any markings is here, clearly a "O" for open. 4 indicates a stopped note. That last measure is just a clear as a bell "C" arpeggio.

OKAY_ALL CLEAR.

Knowing full well I am considerably 'less than an expert', I think the A preserves the minor nature of the tune. The C works for that measure but it would end the tune in Cmaj. If you use the A, it ends the tune in Am...which, I believe, resolves the tune to tonic, eh? It also leads well back "Da Capo" for another round of finger-twisting.

Hey Marc...don't need to be no expert. Just an eye, an ear, and an opinion.

LOL, opinions I got! ;-)

It is a neat tune in any case. Not all that difficult (except getting the timing right). Some of those double-grace notes are being hard to get 'in time'. Of course, not up to Twisstastic speed...yet!

Hi Tim, in the Banjoist from 1871 it is the way you play it.  -- Just FYI as you are correct.

The next American Banjo Fraternity rally theme is Frank Converse and I was thinking about playing this piece as he has in in two books.  It must have been a Converse favorite too.
