Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

Changed from "Blindfold Test" to "Mystery Tune". This one comes from our first banjo "tutor" (NO- not the Briggs', but Gumbo Chaff...the one we don't talk about). It was a widely recognized and played song in the early Minstrel shows. This book is full of straight melody...before the idea of writing down a banjo arrangement ever happened. If this is not played in the correct spirit, let me know...I really don't know the tune. I've never heard a vocal rendition. Must have been a hoot! Must have been some European melody...IAN IAN....you are needed here.

On second thoughts could also be "Life on the Ocean Wave".

That's the tune. Written in 1838.

What is it called in the preceptor?

A Life On The Ocean Wave - We used to play a version of this for some strange old-time couple dance when I used to play with the old guys (long before I turned into one) It's a song too.

It's called "A Life By The Galley Fire" in that book.

That title may be from a parody of the original song. There were a few - "Life in A Prairie Shack", "Life on The Raging Canal" etc.- I believe the Masciales sing the last one.

Galley Fire was big in the playbills, I believe. See the link from the Stanwood discussion.

Tim,I've always heard this as"Life on a Vicksburg bluff" song by confederate troops during the war.
