Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

A piece taken from Coe's Fiddle Collection c.1880. This is a great one for maintaining the Banjo Characteristic, needing only fingerings to give it greatest effeciency. Rhythmically really interesting, and a few small harmonic twists that surprise you.

That's really exotic sounding. It doesn't much seem to follow the usual anglo/celtic formulas. I wonder where and how it came to be. Impressive intonation way up the neck - and you don't even appear to be looking at your fingers!

Thanks for posting that.

Thanks Ian. Yes, it struck me as unusual also. Like many of these quirky, syncopated pieces, it would be well served if accompanied by rhythm instruments. It helps the listener find "One" and gives a better flow. I did my own adjustments on those incomplete bars...I think sometimes leaving as is, and sometimes adding the half beat missing.
