One of THE most popular tunes of the early 19th Century. This version, taken from Christy's Ethiopian Glee Book represents just one of the many versions, each one lamenting a loss.

I do Mary Blane, but as Tim said, there were many versions. The version I sing uses this melody, but the lyrics found at http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/ampage?collId=mussm&fileName=sm2/...
The challenge of course is the use of the word nigger in the third verse, I don't change it, because it makes a powerful point. Now the problem - we usually avoid this kind of controversy on the website. So, I was debating whether or not to make a recording. How do people feel about this, any thoughts?
As another point with Mary Blane, there were two melodies that were used. The sheet music I referenced uses the other melody. However, I prefer the melody Tim played, and so I use German's lyrics with the alternative melody. This kind of thing was common in the minstrel shows.
