Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

I just got a set of strings on the new banjo and by golly it seems to work! It's made from an old grain measure and a nice hunk of very hard maple. This fretless business is going to take a little getting used to though. I believe I'll learn to love all those fine first position tunes!

Thanks Tim, I've never made a real instrument before. It has a couple of very minor setup issues that I still have to deal with, but I'm pretty pleased with it. I got some great advice from Jay Moschella on mounting the head and some help with the pegs from a former dulcimer maker up here. I'm still waiting on a set of real gut strings.

Jay is really good at putting on a tight tacked skin. My banjo head was always really firm. I'm sure you got some good tips.

Well done Ian. Enjoyable as always. And I am so jealous over your ability to make your own instrument. Sounds good, and will sound GREAT with some good-quality gut strings.

Thankfully there are plenty of first-position tunes!

Ian, your banjo sounds great, I look forward to taking it for a spin at AEBG III. And don't worry about not smiling, we all need to do that more.

well done, making my own banjos is something I'd really like to get into. Perhaps even make a living off of them someday.

I've been travelling. The banjo looks and sounds great! I've got a case of the serious looking banjoist as well.
