Nice Tim. Your gourd banjo has a beautiful tone.

This is lovely. Where is this tune from? Is it yours?

Thanks. This is that same tune from Kerr's. I switched instruments to a gourd with a higher tuning, slowed it down, kept the rhythms square, and made up a new name. I'm just sort of running free with this experiment. even seeing how the title can effect perception.

That gourd's got such a big open sound. If you want to sing that one, it goes:

"Ho, ho, the rattlin' bog,
The bog down in the valley-o.
Rare Bog, the rattlin' bog,
The bog down in the valley-o.

Well in the bog there was a hole,
A rare hole and a rattlin' hole,
And the hole in the bog,
And the bog down in the valley-o...etc."

What was it called in Kerr's?

It is called John McAlpine. Seriously...this has been adapted for lyrics?

I sang that in grade school! Now I've got to play the song.

It's a real standard in the "Arrrgh Me Boys" Irish pub band repertoire. You can get a taste of it on an amazing number of Youtube videos. The John McAlpine B music isn't part of the song - at least the way I've heard it.

I'm just not spotting any. Hook up a link if you get a chance.

When it's a a song it's called "The Rattling Bog" Here's one:

The melody is also a variant of "Oft In The Stilly Night" (except in common time not 3/4) which we were just discussing a couple of weeks ago but I can't find the thread anywhere. I remember mentioning Thomas Moore the Irish poet. I don't know how that came up.
