Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

Here are two songs in the Phil Rice Book of 1858 credited to Buckley, whose own publication would appear in 1860. Notice a little "Chickamoniny" in Set 'em up John.
The first one messed with my head a little, but not until I played it back. The "one" is unclear and the time falls into a black hole in spite of the steady pulse. Then I listen back again and it is clear as day the other way around. Strange...a little M.C. Escher-ish. You gotta see the score to understand the time. Or maybe it's just me. I'll keep playing this one.

Come Shine Out Peggy is indeed a little odd. I'll have a go at it later as it sounds like fun.

It's really coming home to me how different each publication is from its predecessor. A world of a difference between Rice and Briggs, then Buckley just went somewhere else. These two pieces of his in Rice give a hint of what is to come. Then Converse appeared...

I just keep hearing the first note as a downbeat when I play it back. Delightful!
