From Briggs' Banjo Instructor of 1855, more or less. I fudge those two g notes into one at the very end of the last measure. I spent some time fooling around with it and found that you do get an interesting sound if you play the first one as written and thumb the second one an octave lower on the open 4th string. It's definitely easier to play that way too, at least for me.
