Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

I decided to play this because I love the tune and I learned to play triplets! I think I try to put them in almost everything I play now!

Well done Tom. I enjoyed that. Triplets are hard - you are doing well. I like the sound of your banjo too. Please tell us more about it and the strings you are using.

Rob,Thanks for the compliment. My dad,his brother and myself built that banjo. It`s not the best of construction, but it does have a animal skin head(goat skin),no frets and nylgut strings. The body was made by cutting 1 inch thick circles from a flat piece of pine, stacking them on top of each other, glueing them together, and sanding it all down! The neck was cut a little narrow where the nut is which makes it a little hard to play as far as the fingering goes.I hope to buy a tackhead sometime this year(maybe by Christmas)that will be a little more period correct.

Well, you are far more resourceful than me. I can't imagine ever thinking that there might even be a possibility of me even thinking I might be able to make a banjo...if that makes any sense?!

So, once more, well done.
