Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

One of the funkiest 19th Century banjo pieces, courtesy of F.B. Converse. Something is still off in my video conversion, so just enjoy the wierdness as the sounds runs askew from the motion

Brilliant. It's a great tune, and you certainly make the most of it. Well done.

Thanks (again) for bringing another great tune to our attention. I've already been scaring the neighbours with it - although I haven't worked up any speed yet. I think there are real "shades of things to come" in this number. Parts of it are almost like a Duane Eddie or Link Wray rockabilly tune.

I agree...great tune. And I don't find anything quite like it anywhere. This is a case where notation really can express the desired feel of the song. The prescribed rhythms make it funky and syncopated. When I first heard it by the great Clarke B, I couldn't quite imagine it being anything other than a "head arrangement" or some modified improvisation, but seeing it in the Analyitcal blew my socks off. I think it is good slower also. It takes on yet another character. Next week or so, I'm going to rehearse with a drummer/percussionist and take another stab at some of these. THAT is another needed dimension to this music...percussion.
