From Elias Howe's Banjo Preceptor (1848). The Key of Bb fits the banjo nicely in standard Minstrel Tuning. There is no need to change anything and you can play the music exactly as it is written. But you do have to get over a basic aversion to using a closed position. Also, again, no thumb string is required, although it could easily be added if you wanted to.
