Joel Sweeney's Black Banjo Teacher Named
In the spirit of this weekend's amazing effort at Appomattox Court House NHP to tell the WHOLE story of the banjo- I share my transcription of the only instance that I know of in which the black banjo player, or at least 1 of them, that taught Joel Sweeney banjo, is actually given a name. As a period piece of newspaper writing, it has its usual collection of language particular to the time period.

Tom, Unfortunately I cannot. This is a transcription of an old photostat copy WITHOUT a date or masthead that was collected by George Collins who spearheaded the effort to get a proper headstone installed for Joel Sweeney.
Judging from the context of the rest of the page, I am estimating the late1880s- mid 1890s.
