Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

Here's a Japanese woodblock print entitled “Ijin yukyo zu” (Foreign People Enjoying Music) by Yokohama artist Ichigeisai Yoshitomi. The performers are labeled by nationality: German, English, American, Dutch, French, and Chinese. The American (with tophat) appears to be playing a minstrel banjo, although the Japanese artist has given it some shamisen-like features.
