From an 1838 issue of the New Orleans Picayune. Old Corn Meal was a black street vendor and musician and he was the first black man to appear on the white stage in New Orleans.

Brian, this is a great post. I just checked out Old Corn Meal on wikipedia...some very fascinating stuff that I never knew before.
