What's the string goin into f shape? I noticed banjo player has a small tri string type of thing with sumthin hanging on it. Bones player also has a lil black string showing too.

ahhh cool, so that lil guy is a winder key. very cool.

i tried searching google to see if a wire or string in the hole was a common thing and didn't get much of anything.

I've seen strings used to aid in the repositioning of the sound post and have heard of folks who like to tinker just leaving them in place.

Last year at AEBG Dr. Chris Smith suggested that the banjo player in Mount's painting may have been his coachman and that the item on the string was the mouthpiece to his coachman's horn.

No it would be tied around the sound post with the ends coming out both F holes and tied underneath as described in the article I posted.
