Are those side dots?  Could be that the frets, smooth or raised, were added later.

I didn't pay close enough attention!  Maybe when I get him to let me borrow it I'll find out more.  These Dobson's are weird-it doesn't seem like anyone spends too much time studying them.  I'm looking forward to doing something with it.
