Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

So I just finished the last of 50 songs in this collection. They are in a playlist on my youtube site. I hope you enjoyed the postings. This collection always fascinated me with its rich melodic content and harmonic and rhythmic possibilities. A Baur should be especially interesting to us because of his early connections.....his mentioning the Briggs book as a very good representation of what the banjo sounded like then, and his connection to players during the actual Civil War, he being a veteran. It is monophonic ( one note at a time for the most part ) so it keeps it somewhat in the old tradition, but the melodies are twisty, modulating, and reflect change in musical tastes. The traditional form of hornpipes and jigs is present. All in all, delightful stuff. I hope it provides inspiration to explore Minstrel banjo on the outer edge.

I will try and listen to the playlist during the week. It was fun watching it build up.

As a person he was, but this work pushes the boundary. Almost Classic...or is it???
