Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

How did most of you learn this tune? Briggs'? From hearing somebody do it? The actual music is a little (actually quite a bit) different from what we normally hear.

okay - DISCLAIMER!!!  They aren't bad versions...it just ain't what the music is. Whatcha think?

Yes, but did you notice all the differences in this version?

The version we usually here is harmonized with that main strong tone being the third of the chord, making that first motif Root to Third. This one is harmonized all on the root note, except for that little twist in there. Then you have those  ad lib phrases...never heard anybody do that. Also, the chorus would have the melody start lower...instead of going up higher. These are pretty significant differences. Just wondered who started the version we all copy? Aslo, the cool walk around at the end nobody does.

I guess most people sing it how they heard it in the Briggs' book. That's one of the weird quirks about learning a song from an arrangement. Don't get me wrong, it's cool...but then you just end up losing the tune.

Okay, well I'll bite on this one. I'll step out back and see if the wind isn't too stiff get a video...it's nice outside.

Anybody care to join me???

The "Josie" Files!!

I'm certain there are many ways to interpret that arrangement...the ad libs??? Who knows what went on there with the phrasing and the show. The melodic contour, however, seems set.
