Shamisen Playing 2005
This is me playing the Shamisen at Mt. Osorezan, Aomori Prefecture, Japan. 2005. The Shamisen is the banjo's fretless, 3 string Japanese cousin, which I studied for about 5 years. Sorry the quality is so bad.

Yep, Tim, the bachi (Japanese for plectrum) is about the size of a small spatula-HUGE! One thing I noticed when I started playing banjo is that the hand position for clawhammer/stroke style is almost identical to the hand position for holding bachi. (thumb out, fingers curved around). Also, a lot of the left hand techniques are the same-pull offs, hammer ons, slides, etc.

I just LOVE the texture sound of the shamisen...like crisp parchment and whispering bamboo leaves...ok maybe that's just in my brain. ;D
