Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

I added some additional variations. I couldn't help the quote or copying Tim's style of ending. Immitation is definitely sincere flattery.

I did not exactly play what I wrote down, but here is my arrangement as I originally wrote it.

I'm not sure what the quote was, but there is a hilarious bit around 1:55 that made me think of Zorro. What is it from?

BTW, that banjo has a great tone, to my ear.

The "Quote" at 1:55 (and a little before) is from Espania Cani, (Spanish Gypsy dance). It actually post dates our period a little, but it was too tempting to throw in.

Excellent, John. I like the dotted ideas, and the minor bit was inspired. I would not have thought of that. I've got some ideas cookin', but I'll wait 'till Friday to spring them.

John,

What a delight to review your arrangement. I have always been left wanting more beyond the 1st variation in the Briggs book. You have quenched my desire to experience something more. Thank you! This is a great attempt at creating something new that adds to the original material found in the early repertoire. It truly varies what exists and, for me, alludes to the increasing challenges that Yankee Doodle w/ Variations, but you take things even further. I actually tried playing through it BEFORE listening to your performance. It's fascinating to hear the difference.

I'm so happy that you guys are maintaining these types of exchanges. I truly believe they are valuable as part of an ongoing dialog in exploring the multi-faceted and variegated history of the banjo. Keep it up!

With appreciation,
Greg

Hey John, did you post your written music somewhere? I would like to see it if you did. This was a pretty neat project, wasn't it? I wonder if there is an unfinished manuscript somewhere. Either that, or they realized it was just a pretty lame theme to build on and quit.
