I still remember Elmer Fudd singing Oh Susanna too.  Tom I had similar experiences going to schools and playing these songs, mostly none of the students had ever heard them.  One school I received a big surprise, we went in and played Oh Susanna, and everyone in the class stated singing right along with us.  Ok that was cool I thought.  So we played the Bonnie Blue Flag, and once again the students stated all singing right along, wow they actually know the words to at least parts of it.  I asked how this was, and the history teacher told me she had got together with the music teacher to teach them some of the songs from the time period the history teacher was teaching from.  I thought what a great idea.

I think that the reason these songs are no longer being taught has to do with being very careful to not offend anyone, considering these songs were mostly representative of minstrel song traditions.
