From Ryan’s Mammoth Collection, by way of Tim Twiss’ Gourd Banjo Music.

I like it when we apply the techniques from the tutorials and then use other period sources to expand the repertoire! No doubt banjoists of the mid-19th C applied the banjo to other popular music of the day such as brass band, fife &drum, and social orchestra music, etc.
Paul, I found Ryan's Mammoth Collection. It says they're fiddle tunes. Does the music as written work for banjo? Or is that where Tim comes in with adaptation? Thanks in advance...
I don’t have the collection. I’m playing Tim’s arrangement.
Fiddle music is a very good source of material. Many of the early banjo players also played fiddle, so the integration was logical. When choosing a fiddle tune for banjo, almost ANY will work.....but some are better than others. I look for the "arrangeability " of the music.....interval shapes and leaps......and especially where the thumb string can fit into the arrangement as a Tonic.
Thanks, Tim! Good to know. I didn't want to buy it and have a "non-useful" book, since I don't play fiddle.
If you go to my Youtube site and find a playlist called "Fiddle Tunes"....you will find 94 arrangements not found in the Tutors
Great! Thanks, Tim! I'll check it out...
