Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

An original composition, for fretless banjo and written in the style of the 19th Century tradition. Played on period instruments...PERIOD! Slip sliding into the 21st Century.

Speculative, but I don't think improvised phrases are beyond the 19th century mind.....here is a truley gray and unproveable venture. bear with my experimentation. No claim here...just enjoying it.

Tim--Since Mozart was a master of improvization, the idea was certainly there.  Can't vouch for banjo players, but I'm sure it's a safe bet.

Many kinds of improv. You're right Rob. Have you ever heard of Ross Tompkins? He was the Tonight Show pianist for Carson. I saw him playing at Donte's. They were playing something...maybe "I'll remember April", and they were swinging hard. Someone in the band said "Bach" and they switched into this other thing...like how you would play on a figured bass. It was wild...improv, but a whole different flavor. never forgot that.
