Buckley 1860

I blogged my way through Briggs' and Rice as I was recording them. Time to settle down and attack the Buckley 1860. My car car is out of commission, it's getting cold, I have a nice banjo....so here I go. Front to back...the instrumentals. It's a chance to comment on them as i go, with remarks about stroke or fingerstyle choices, and wrong note included in score. No need to respond if you don't don't want to, but this will go on for a while. As I do them, they will be for sale on my music site.

I would not mind writing some out, if folks were to want them. I would do it by hand, and most likely not finger it too much. Anybody interested??
Or better yet, if anybody wants to gain the skill of tabbing, I'll work with you....you do it, I check it...we post it.

I'm interested in tabs.  I'd like to try tabbing something out, but fear I'd fall too far behind with all the other stuff I'm already into!  So many hobbies and responsibilities.

Okay, up through page 18....Parker's Best, and Jig from French Quadrilles. Jig appears other times in later books under different names....Converse especially...Greenie and the Analytical.

Adding from page 19 "Stop Jig, "Bryant;s Jig" and "Rattlesnake Jig". This stuff is really into the pudding. In particular, Bryant's Jig is awesome. It's rhythmic thing, and the intervals 4ths, 2nds, and 5ths, give it some exotic feel. Call it African or what ever.....great tune. Found also in Rice under a different title.

Adding "Buckley's, or Green Corn". At 46% and good mic placement, this one sounds pretty good. Trying to be mindful of a good tempo, and keeping the the dotted notes long enough all the way through. They have a way of rounding themselves off as you get further into the tune.

Next 6 pages...ahhhh. Going to be fun. 18 tunes done at this point.

As I am plowing through this book, the thought comes to mind....if there were not SOME sort of standardiaztion, or "way" people played the banjo back then, than why are so many accounts of playing so similar? These books each have a flavor, but nothing is radically different. I'm still betting these books give you 90% of the picture for most situations.

Good harvest tonight. RH is 47%. Nice bite from the banjo. Did 9 tunes from pages 20-22. hese are some of the really good ones, including Boston Jig (a beginners favorite) Fairy dance (showing off G. Swaine Buckley's flashy skill) Skiowa Jig (one that most people don't play) Harper's Jig ( a favorite) Jim Crow Jig (Phil Rice's Excelsior Jig dotted and renamed) Joe Sweeney's Jig (Johnny Boker) and can-brake Jig...one i keep alive in my personal repertoire.
