I agree that the low cost banjos, several of which I have restored, are great instruments for playing the songs of early minstrelsy, as opposed to the later guitar style or classical banjo material.  Fancy fretted parlor banjos from the 1880's and 1890's are better suited for the later fare, but that music is not, for me at least, the essence of minstrel banjo.
