I make them myself. I have 3 materials...Sugar Pine, Redwood, and Cedar. The Sugar Pine is so soft, it dents with a fingernail, but somehow transmits the most volume.

I slot them deep unough to withstand strong pulls on the string, but not so deep that it deadens the note.
