This is interesting... It appears that your dowel stick is an integral extension of your neck as there is no "heel" that I can see. So the maximum depth of your neck is 1", the thickness of your stock with no heel added to it. I have been using an added heel on mine making the depth at that point roughly 2" and my dowel stick is separate. I may just try one your way just to see how it works. My thought was that if I ever have to ship my instrument somewhere the integral (non-detatchable) dowel stick will make for a long package.   Maybe it isn't a problem worth worrying about. Detail on the photo is a little unclear so maybe i am misinterpreting what I see.

Bart, bad photo so I will have to add another. There is a heal but it is lost in the shadow in this shot. It had wet varnish on it and the glare threw off the photo. Although, you are right about it being integral to the neck. I had a large enough blank to do it this way so why not?
