Has anybody ever seen something like this before? It's a tackhead but the tacks go through the tension hoop.

 $_57 (5).JPG, 170 KB                            Yes, I was thinking modern day. Good to know that the tacks are easy to obtain. The banjo is from a sale in Fredricksburg, VA. It was sold along with a very beat up 5-string from the 1880s or 1890s. Here are more pictures:

Is that a screw through the heel into the dowel?
I'm not sure, I'm waiting for it to be delivered. The rosewood veneer looks very good and I think I got it for a good price... you can never have too many banjos.
