Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

decided to make some spillway bridges. I had seen these on the internet, new i wanted a variety but couldn't spend that much, so from eyeballing photos i came up with a nice set. plain cuban mahogany, plain brazilian rosewood, maple and cocoblo, maple and mahogany. i have noticed the harshness from the banjo is removed, and she he strings are more balanced. nice

tom, do you think your string gauges would work on my banjos? my scale prefrence is 25" give or take a fraction.
i usually use Just Strings .com for my guitars, but really hadn't a clue on sizes for nylon strings as my guitars are steel stringed. i figured by buying barrys set for his A scale banjo, i could put my calipers on them and then get a good idea of what will work. I like a heavey string.

i suppose since your banjo is longer scale i could just up the size slightly and be safe. btw i went thru many of your videos and really like your style and voice.

Sounds like the classic nylguts. I found em to gummy and flappy for minstrel tuning. The minstrel nylguts come with wound fourth and are better suited.

Yeah, sounds like you tried Nylgut 'Classic' set... which though I can use for higher oldtime tunings, are too thin for low minstrel tunings...unless you have a particularly long necked banjo... which apparently you don't.

You might like the Nylgut Minstrel set.  (hmm..$7.90/set is ..too expensive?)

I find them to be pretty indestructable, unless you put them on fretted banjos in which case they'll wear a bit faster on the frets.  Still, good nylon strings last way longer on a fretted banjo than real gut strings (which are great of course, but way more expensive).

Mimmo is a very good friend of mine (inventor of NulGut) but he doesn't sell singles in a variety of guages, otherwise, I'd buy his strings. But I never buy sets from anyone. I always buy singles and make my own custom sets.

oh crap! i was paying around 21 dollars a set! buying things from the virgin islands is sometimes cost prohibitive although we use usps, they label us international shipping.

yes , i agree. when you finally settle on a string type and size, it is best to buy them in singles
