What he is doing here seems to me like the missing link between the Akonting, Clawhammer, and the Blues.

A lot of good musicians create their own sort of hybrid styles that blend different elements.  Sometimes they don't even think about it much- it just happens naturally.  Like when someone starts using Travis picking on a mountain dulcimer...using skills they have in their music toolbox.
