I have seen "Duett" listed in othe books when it is a monphonic line....see the Old Cremona Songster.....page 54.

what's a monphonic line, please?

One line of music....few or no chords / double stops etc.

A singer...most banjo music.

Tim, is there any reason why you don't take the rest at the end of the piece into consideration before you start thru the piece the second time?  Or am I missing something?

I used it for the pickup notes on the repeat....generally implied on a repeated tune.

Comment by Paul Draper on October 28, 2012 at 4:58pm

Ah.  That makes sense, thanks.  So is it "wrong" to respect the rest at the end of the piece if one is repeating, or should you always use it for the pickup notes?

Comment by Strumelia on October 28, 2012 at 5:12pm

I believe it's customary to use the last rest for the pick up notes if you are repeating, rather than add another measure that is mostly empty except for pickup notes.

If the second part starts with pickup notes and there is no rest at the end of the first part, you would use the pickup notes as though they were a 'second ending' for the first part  -preferable to adding another measure just to fit in pickup notes.

UNLESS...you are purposely vamping/resting/stretching things out between sung verses, etc.

Thanks Strumelia.  This is all pretty much new to me as I read music poorly and don't know the conventions...  But I know more now than I did this morning!  'Preciate it!

And I'll likely be offline for a few days starting tomorrow midday- according to this:
