Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

This version is from Converse 1865. If I were starting over, this would certainly be one of the first tunes I would learn. I'd like to hear anything that you have to say about Juba as a piece of music or a dance...or any other relationship this piece has to the early banjo repertoire and 19th Century culture.

Tim,

This was certainly the first tune I learned! It is the first song in Bob Flesher's Learning Minstrel Banjo. And I think that it is no mistake that the first two or the Movements or practice pieces in Briggs are nearly identical to Juba. It is an ideal place to start. I drove my family crazy playing Juba.

Here's a couple useful links that I found:

The minstrel tunes are new to me so I'm easing into it. I've noticed Juba in the Converse book but haven't tried it yet. Your rendition will be a great help. I've been working on Alabama Joe, Jim Along Josey, Old Johnny Boker, and Old Dan Tucker from the Briggs book. Not quite up to full speed, but having fun with it!

This version is  really cool,  different than the one I learned in the strikes combos vid.

 Goota learn this.

There are three that come to mind...Buckley 1860, Converse 1865, and Rice 1858.

Greatly appreciate this! A fun melody, and a great exercise! (Not that I get a lot of exercise.)
