Yes i always use a piece of this stuff in my lap to keep my gourd from sliding around. But i buy small 1 foot wide rolls of it as 'shelf liner' in the hardware or home goods sections.  It's thin and rubbery.  I found some that is tan, like the color of chamois.  I tried real chamois cloth (it's like suede) but that doesn't work very well- slides too much.  I couldn't keep my gourd still without it, since my gourd banjo is rounder and not as flat-backed as some canteen gourd banjos i see folks with.

P.S. I wouldn't want to glue anything on my gourd banjo, and with the rubber shelf liner piece, you don't need to. Like Tim says, just lay apiece in your lap.  :)
