Where I taught in China winters were chilly - not cold enough for class rooms to be heated, but cold enough for fingerless gloves to be de rigueur. And coats...

I think I need to invest in something warmer than this duster for winter gear.

Definately!  Dusters are only ment to protect the clothes you are wearing underneath.  Not the warmest choice, which I imagine you have discovered.
