For enthusiasts of early banjo

Anybody ever seen this shot? I don't think it is the Hunchback banjo, is it?

Wow - what a collection of faces! Is the banjo an Ashborn?

Im stating the obvious Im sure, but notice the drummer sitting right beside him on the drum holding drumsticks?

Not that obvious...I missed him. Very cool.

So, Lucas...one of your relatives? ;-)

There's another cool photo of a Navy banjoist recently posted to the Banjohangout...includes a drummer too. Sailors from the USS Maine ca 1896. Maybe there is a long-buried Naval tradition of Banjo and drum?

It would appear to me that the Gent playing the banjo is in reality a Marine. Note that he is wearing a Kepi, sack coat and light cooered trousers. Also if you enlarge the the Banjo player, you can notice part of the Marine insignia(a bugle) just above the hat visor.

According to the caption I've seen before, this photo was taken aboard the USS Mendota. It sure does look an Ashborn banjo.

I stand corrected on my earlier comment that the photo was taken on the USS Mendota. According to the US Navy website it was actually taken on board the USS Miami.
