I've only been a member of this ning for a couple months, but have already played several times with fellow central NC members Jack Whaley, James Pentecost, Mark Weems, and Rob Morrison. I don't play banjo at all, but do play whistles, anglo concertina, tambo, and bones. We're having a great time experimenting with combinations of instruments.
Marc--Bryant is being modest. In addition to all those intruments he plays, he's also quite a good singer which, for me at least, is a completely unattainable goal.--Rob Morrison
Hi Marc. I'm also from southeast PA (southern Chester County) but I'm not sure where Tamaqua is (maybe it's like Diddy-wha-diddy). Gettysburg is about 2 hours west of me too! I play in a band, at CW events (Camptown Shakers), our first outing will probably be at Neshaminy in Late April. Maybe see you there? Dave Culgan
Hey Dave. Thanks for the message. To get to Tamaqua just keep heading up Rt 309 until you start to see the edge of the earth straight ahead, then make the first left... Enjoyed watching your videos. I play some clawhammer and I am in the process of getting my first minstrel banjo. Like to find one locally that I can try out first any suggestions? Neshaminy sounds good keep me posted on that one. Does your band have a website?
Lots of us here have found banjos right in our own workshop; Terry Bell offers a right priced Boucher style in kit form. Little effort required to assemble and finish, but the finished item is something to be proud of (he's also glad to ship you one all done). Otherwise most of the instruments I see pop up for sale are classified listings on the banjo hangout forum. I can understand your wanted to source something local that you can try out first but I can't think of anywhere closer than NYC where you might find a shop with any in stock. I may end up selling my older Boucher style banjo, and if so would probably display it at CW events like Neshaminy. I'll let you know if I decide to go that way. The only band website for us now is Camptown Shakers on facebook. Dave
